| In 1993 the Director General of the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN) and 1984 Physics Nobel Laureate C. Rubbia presented to his colleagues of
CERN a simple concept for clean energy production and elimination of nuclear waste. Such a revolutionary machine, which he called the Energy Amplifier (EA), is the result of
a "cross-fertilization" between the technology of modern accelerators and that of nuclear power production. In contrast to an ordinary reactor, the EA produces energy (in the
form of heat) as a result of nuclear cascades, rather than of a self-sustained chain reaction. Nuclear cascades are initiated by relativistic protons produced by a small, but
efficient, accelerator and the risks of a Chernobyl-type accident are intrinsically eliminated. The use of an external source of neutrons allows the exploitation of the
Thorium cycle, a mere dream for the nuclear engineers in the sixties, because it opens the way to an unlimited source of energy and virtually eliminates the production of
Actinides, the most offending contribution to nuclear waste. In past years, such ideas have been developed using sophisticated computer simulations and CFD calculations
and are now a leading European project in the field of future energy production and nuclear radioactive waste transmutation. |

| A joint ENEA-INFN Research Project for the design of an Accelerator Driven System (ADS) for Nuclear Waste Transmutation. The program aims to study the physics and to develop the technologies needed to design an Accelerator Driven System (ADS) for nuclear waste transmutation and has been prepared with close reference to Carlo Rubbia’s proposal. The program consists of two main parts, regarding, respectively, the accelerator and the sub-critical system. Although ENEA and INFN will be jointly responsible for the whole program, INFN will essentially manage the first part, and ENEA the second part.
The proposed project will concern all the main subsystems of an ADS (accelerator, window/target, sub-critical reactor). However, due to the limited available financial resources, it has been decided to concentrate efforts on some significant and qualified activities, in view of the goal of participation in an international project for the construction of an ADS prototype, like the Energy Amplifier for waste transmutation. |

| The Laboratory was founded in 1976. Since 1984 research has been carried on with the help of a SMP Van de Graaff Tandem. This accelerator is an improved version of the MP13 type of HVEC. In 1992 it was upgraded to reach a nominal maximum voltage of 16MV.
A major develepment in which LNS was involved in the same years concerns the cyclotron with superconductive coils (CS). The maximum field of 4.8 T (Kb = 800) is obtained with superconducting Nb coils cooled down to 4.2 K in an LHe cryostat.
The CS cyclotron is routinely working since 1995, giving heavy ion beams at intermediate energy (a few tens of MeV per nucleon) |

| ESARDA is an association of European organisations formed to advance and harmonise research and development in the area of safeguards. It also provides a forum for the exchange of information and ideas between nuclear facility operators, safeguards authorities and persons engaged in research and development. ESARDA was formed in 1969 with the purpose of facilitating collaboration in R&D in the field of safeguards and in the application of such R&D to the safeguarding of source and special fissile materials. This co-operation is effected through co-ordination and harmonisation of the R&D work of the partners, by the exchange of information and assistance on a personnel and technical level, and by the joint execution of these programmes or parts thereof. The key element of ESARDA's activities is the frequent interaction between R&D personnel, plant operators and safeguards authorities. Ideally these interactions will reduce the burden of safeguards on the participants. |

| Started in Aug 1991, arXiv.org (formerly xxx.lanl.gov) is a fully automated electronic archive and distribution server for research papers. Covered areas include physics and related disciplines, mathematics, nonlinear sciences and computer science.
Users can retrieve papers from the archive either through a world wide web interface, or by sending commands to the system via e-mail. Similarly, authors can submit their papers to the archive either using the world wide web interface, using ftp, or using e-mail. Authors can update their submissions if they choose, though previous versions remain available. Mechanisms for searching through the collection of papers are also provided.
Users can also register to automatically receive a listing of newly submitted papers in areas of interest to them, when papers are received in those areas. These listings are sent by e-mail. |
