In accordance with the Working Agreement of the coalition parties, the Austrian Government has declared for the legislative period 1990 - 94 and reiterated in 1996 the intention to strive for the allocation of an large-scale international research facility. Two relevant project proposals have emerged after examination of several interesting initiatives, namely AUSTRON and EURO-CRYST, which have gained international recognition.

One of the main functions assigned to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) by its Statute is to foster the exchange of scientific and technical information on peaceful uses of atomic energy. The eleventh edition of the World Survey of Activities in Controlled Fusion Research will serve to fulfil the goal of providing researchers, scientists, engineers, advisers on science policy, science policy makers and all those who are interested in controlled nuclear fusion with information about laboratories and institutions that are involved in this area of nuclear science. The World Survey of Activities in Controlled Fusion Research is not only a database containing an up to date list of laboratories and an Alphabetical Personnel Index of the scientific staff employed at the various institutes, but is intended to serve as a means to foster communication between researchers.

The Institute for Medium Energy Physics (IMEP) in Vienna carries out research in subatomic physics using particle accelerators in the medium-energy domain. IMEP co-operates closely with the Laboratori Nazionali di Frascati of INFN in Frascati, Italy, the Paul Scherrer Institute of ETH in Villigen, Switzerland, and with TRIUMF, Canada. Work at IMEP concentrates on basic research in the area of nuclear and particle physics. Other fields of interest are the physics of exotic atoms and molecules with particular emphasis on application-oriented research in muon-catalyzed fusion of hydrogen isotopes. Fourteen partner institutions (from a total of 34) all over the world participate in IMEP's fusion experiments.
