Abstract

We developed a multi-dimensional GAs Multicomponent Mixture Analysis (GAMMA) tool to analyze an air ingress accident, which is one of the key safety issues for HTGRs as well as the thermal hydraulic characteristics in a pebble bed-type GCR. In the validation with both the inverse U-tube and HTTR-simulated air ingress experiments, the behavior of each species as well as the onset times of natural convection show a level of agreement within a 10% deviation from the experimental data. Small internal leaks in the HTTR-simulated test facility have been found to significantly affect the consequence of an air ingress. For the benchmark calculation with a SANA-1 afterheat removal test in a pebble bed, the predicted results of GAMMA agree closely with the measured temperature profiles and are comparable to those of other analysis codes (TINTE, THERMIX, and TRIO-EF).
