Abstract

Work on the 1000 Mwe size GCFBR has been carried out by Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd. Continuously since 1967. Since 1970, our effort has been focused to the He Gas-cooled fast breeder with pin type mixed oxide fuel and indirect steam cycle. At present the work on primary system and safety are in progress. In this report, some of studies on He GCFBR is briefly described. As the designing parameters, fuel pin diameter, reactor core height, coolant flow area ratio, and blanket thickness were taken for the survey of thermo-nuclear performance and also fuel burn up characteristics. To do these, two-dimensional burn up calculations were executed including the two-batch refueling. After the wide range of parametric survey, the optimization was processed considering fissile Pu inventory, doubling time and fuel cycle cost. It was pointed that He GCFBR has the promising feature such as 2,500 kg of fissile inventory and about 9 years of doubling time.
