Abstract
The IAEA Study Group Meeting on "Gas-Cooled Fast Reactors" was held in Minsk, Beylourussian SSR, from 24 to 28 July 1972. The main national programmes are now in the field of research and development of sodium-cooled fast reactors, but some effort is directed towards the gas-cooled fast reactors which have the advantage of a harder neutron spectrum and a higher conversion factor than a sodium-cooled fast reactor. The aims of the meeting were as follows: Review of the present status of studies on gas-cooled fast breeder reactors; comparison of the likely characterisation of industrial gas-cooled and liquid metal-cooled fast breeder reactors and their potential for further development; consideration of the extra cost and efforts needed to develop gas-cooled fast breeder reactors over and above that required for liquid metal-cooled fast breeder reactors. The meeting was well attended (30 representatives from 10 countries and 3 international organizations) and provided a very useful exchange of views on the subject. Among others, the following topics were discussed: Helium-cooled breeders; reliability of the vented fuel for fast reactors; reliability of PCRV for gas-cooled fast reactors; criteria influencing doubling time; dissociating gas, technology. The papers presented at the meeting are published in this report in their original languages.
