Abstract
It is postulated that the hot-spot margin can be regarded 8s consisting of two components. The first component of the margin is the temperature deviation required to ensure that out of a population of nominally identical fuel pins not more than 8 specified number will be outside that deviation. An approximation is introduced here in combining pin and sub-assembly uncertainties to produce a combined uncertainty by adding variances. The second component of the hot-spot m8rgin is the temperature differential required to insure against an adverse reactor contribution. It is, therefore, simply the margin which provides that only one in so many reactors is likely to produce a deviation which could raise above the acceptable limit the number of pins at risk of exceeding the hot-spot limit.
