Conference Article: Omega program & Neutron science project for developing accelerator hybrid system at JAERI

T.Mukaiyama

Abstract

JAERI has been carrying out the partitioning and transmutation study under the OMEGA program. This program covers R&D activities for the developments of, a) wet partitioning process, (b) dedicated fast neutron transmutation systems, one is an Actinide Burner Reactor and the other is an accelerator-driven transmutation system, (c) development of a high intensity proton accelerator, (d) nitride fuel cycle technology fuel manufacturing and pyrochemical reprocessing, and (e) database for nuclear and fuel material properties. Minor actinides can be fuel material under a very hard neutron energy spectrum field. Neutron Science Project has been launched which aims at development and construction of an intense spallation neutron source and research facility complex for basic science and transmutation technology development. The accelerator-driven transmutation system study and the development of an 1.5 GeV, 5.3 mA accelerator for a 5 MW spallation neutron source and for accelerator-driven transmutation experiments are carried out under this project. The major facilities to be built are a super-conducting proton linac, a target station allowing neutron pulses for neutron scattering research, and research facilities for transmutation experiments, neutron physics, material irradiation, medical isotopes production, spallation RI beam production for exotic nuclei investigation.
