In 2002, the IAEA General Conference adopted a new resolution on Nuclear Knowledge, emphasizing the importance of Nuclear Knowledge Management (NKM). The resolution was reiterated in subsequent years. The IAEA General Conference in 2006 (GC(50)/RES/13c) requested the Secretariat to continue to develop guidance for NKM. In response, the IAEA has prepared a number of publications on NKM. This activity will assist nuclear organizations in Member States to effectively apply this guidance and to assist them in benchmarking their practices against those of other organizations.
Those publications are part of the IAEA Nuclear Energy Document Series. On the level of Objectives, the publication “Managing Nuclear Knowledge” (approved for publication in 2007) describes the needs to be considered and achieved at different stages for the peaceful use of nuclear energy in the specific area of NKM.
In conjunction with this publication, Guides describe how to achieve these objectives, and Reports provide detailed information for activities relating to knowledge management in organizations and facilities for nuclear power, nuclear fuel cycle and radioactive waste management and decommissioning. The following guidance publications on NKM have already been published or developed by the IAEA
A further IAEA guidance document is being developed to serve the needs of Nuclear R&D Organizations. In 2006, a first outline was prepared at an IAEA technical meeting with the working title Managing Knowledge for Nuclear Technology Development. The outline was then further developed by the Secretariat and the resulting draft, with the working title Knowledge Management for R&D Organizations, is the basis and starting point for the Technical Meeting.
