INIS, the International Nuclear Information System, is the leading information system on the peaceful uses of nuclear science and technology. Operated by the IAEA, INIS is based on international cooperation with participating Member States and international organizations
There are three major INIS products:
The INIS Database is freely available to subscribers and staff of the IAEA. It offers access to literature on nuclear science and technology published worldwide, covering 1970 to the present; the INIS Database is available online and on CD-ROM. By mid-2007, the INIS Database includes over 2.8 million references and abstracts of journal articles, scientific and technical reports, conference papers, books, patents, nuclear laws, regulations, theses and web documents.
The scope of the INIS Database covers all areas of activities of the IAEA, including nuclear engineering and technology, nuclear safety and radiation protection, safeguards and non-proliferation, applications of nuclear and isotope techniques, nuclear and high energy physics, nuclear and radiation chemistry, nuclear applications in life sciences, legal aspects, and environmental and economic aspects of nuclear and non-nuclear energy sources.
The INIS Multilingual Thesaurus is a major tool for describing nuclear information and knowledge in a structured form, which assists in multilingual and semantic searches.
The IAEA has a dual role in INIS: it is an INIS Member and also functions as the INIS Secretariat, located in the INIS and Nuclear Knowledge Management Section of the IAEA’s Department of Nuclear Energy.
