I. Overview
The INIS and Nuclear Knowledge Management Section in the IAEA’s Department of Nuclear Energy assists Member States in managing nuclear information and knowledge.
It operates the International Nuclear Information System (INIS), the world's leading information source for scientific literature on the peaceful uses of nuclear science and technology, established in 1970. The system includes the INIS Database with today 2.9 million bibliographic references and a unique collection of over 850 000 full-text documents.
The Section implements the Agency’s Nuclear Knowledge Management Programme by
- Developing policy, methodology and guidance for nuclear knowledge management
- Facilitating sustainable education and training in nuclear science and related fields, and
- Maintaining and preserving knowledge in specific areas of nuclear science and technology

Vision
Recognising that knowledge powers the future and that nuclear knowledge is the basis of all nuclear activities,
- To see INIS products and services at the core of a web of nuclear information bases;
- To be the world's most authoritative and comprehensive source of reliable information on the peaceful uses of nuclear science and technology.
Mission
- To assist Member States in preserving and sustaining nuclear knowledge, competence and skills, and in transferring knowledge to future generations;
- To serve as the prime source of methodologies and guidance for implementing knowledge management on corporate and national levels in Member States;
- To create a reservoir of nuclear information and provide quality nuclear information and knowledge management services to Member States;
- To assist with the development of a culture of knowledge sharing within the Agency and amongst Member States;
- To maintain and develop INIS in co-operation with Member States and active partners to preserve scientific and technical nuclear information.
