The Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences was established in 1808 'to promote the arts and sciences of the kingdom'. By royal decree of May 4, 1808 King Louis Napoleon founded the Royal Institute of Sciences, Literature and Fine Arts.

In 1851 the Royal Institute became the Royal Academy of Arts and Sciences. Its aims are to promote both the Sciences and Humanities. Therefore two Divisions were created: a Science and a Humanities Division. The Academy now covers the entire field of learning.
