UNRWA: United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East

UNRWA was established in 1949 to give assistance to some 750,000 Palestinian refugees who had lost their homes and livelihood, as a result of the 1948 Arab-Israeli conflict. It also covers such services as education, health, relief and social services to over 2.9 million Palestine refugees registered in 1994 with UNRWA in Jordan, the Syrian Arab republic, Lebanon, the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.
