The Institute for Transuranium Elements is part of the Joint Research Centre, the scientific wing of the European Commission. It is located in the German national research centre, situated 12 km north of the city of Karlsruhe.

The mission of ITU is to protect the European citizen against risks associated with the handling and storage of highly radioactive elements.
