| The southwestern institute of physics (SWIP) is the largest experimental base for controlled nuclear fusion and plasma physics research, and plasma application research as well in China.
The fusion research projects at SWIP are focused on tokamak experiments of the HL-1M (R=1.02m, a=0.26m, Bt=3T, Ip=350kA), with auxiliary heating (1MW NBI, 1MW LHCD, 0.5MW ECRH, 1MW ICRH), and with fuelling with 8 pellets and supersonic molecular beam injection. A new tokamak with divertor HL-2A (R=1.64m, a=0.4m, Bt=2.8T, Ip=480kA) is being constructed and will be in operation in 2002. Divertor physics, confinement improvement, auxiliary heating and advanced diagnostics will be investigated on HL-2A. Beside tokamak experiments, plasma theory, fusion-fission hybrid reactor concept design and the reactor material development are also pushed up.
Plasma application and spin off: Plasma Source Ion Implantation (PSII); Multifunction Ion Implantation; Magnetron sputter planting; Micro-arc Oxidation and Coloration, et.al.. Environmental protection technology (e.g. plasma stove for treating pulp waste, Magnetization water treatments); Superconducting magnet; Nuclear magnetic resonance imaging and cryogenic technology (e.g. Cryogenic metal treatments, Cryocondensation-cryosorption pumps).

| Nanjing University is a key comprehensive university directly under the State Education Commission. The University dates back to 1902 when Sanjiang Normal School was founded. The School then evolved as Liangjiang Normal School, Nanjing Higher Normal School, National Southeast University, National Fourth Zhongshan University, and National Central University. In August 1949, it was named National Nanjing University. Today's Nanjing University is formed mainly on the basis of the merging of the arts and sciences schools of National Nanjing University and the University of Nanking (a well-known university founded in 1888) during the nationwide institutional and departmental restructuring in 1952. Nanjing University consists of two campuses, one in Gulou and the other in Pukou. |
