INIS/ETDE Thesaurus

Arabic-Chinese-English-French-German-Japanese-Russian-Spanish

FOREWORD

In 1995 the multiligual INIS Thesaurus was published in the languages English, French, German,Russian and Spanishas INIS Reference Series IAEA-INIS-20 (Rev. 1).

The versions in French, German, Russian and Spanish were updated by the INIS Centres of France, Germany, the Russian Federation and Spain in recent years. In 2005 thesaurus versions in Chinese and Arabic were completed by the Chinese INIS Centre andthe INIS Centre of the Syrian Arab Republic, respectively. Japanese version was prepared by the National INIS Center of Japan in 2012.

The INIS Secretariat uses a thesaurus management system that supports Unicode and all official UN languages. As part of the development of the thesaurus management system, a new XML exchange format for the thesaurus was developed. This format has been used to upload the thesauri into the new thesaurus management system in all official UN languages plus German and Japanese. It can be used for distributing and exchanging any version of the thesaurus.

PDF versions were produced for:

  • Monolingual versions of the thesaurus including the full thesaurus hierarchy
  • Multilingual dictionaries without thesaurus hierarchy
  • Interactive multilingual thesaurus with navigation capabilities.

Thesaurus is available under the Publications page of the INIS website.

All these documents are based on the INIS/ETDE Thesaurus. Since English is the source language, and all the other languages are target languages, each descriptor in the source language must be represented by one (and only one) descriptor in the target languages. In some instances, this may lead to somewhat artificial and not entirely satisfactory translations, but it is a necessity of the system.

Since English is the host language of INIS, the central processing of input and preparation of output products atthe INIS Secretariat are carried out in English only, at least with regard to the controlled language fields. Input data prepared inlanguages other than English in the controlled language fields must therefore be mechanically converted to English at the time ofinput processing. Therefore it is required that descriptors in English correspond exactly (in a one-to-one relation) to those in eachof the other languages. However, this restriction is not valid for non-descriptors.

The translations of the terminology from the English version of the INIS Thesaurus into Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Russian and Spanish were performed by specialists from the INIS centres of the Syrian Arab Republic, China, France, Germany, Japan, the Russian Federation and Spain, respectively. All questions and suggestions concerning translations should be directed to these INIS Centres at the addresses listed below. The INIS Secretariat at the IAEA in Vienna is responsible for coordinating the translations and transferring the machine readable terminology files to the IAEA servers in Vienna, as well as merging and performing numerous tests to ensure correctness and completeness. In addition, the INIS Secretariat was responsible for developing the software necessary for maintaining, updating and printing the multilingual files.

The Multilingual Dictionary is intended as a tool to assist indexers, retrievers and other users of the INIS system whose mother tongue is not English. It supports the preparation of input to the system and utilization of its output products. In addition, it also intends to serve those workers in the nuclear field who are not directly connected with INIS, as well as translators, interpreters, authors and others working in the areas of languages, semantics or terminological reference.
