Conference Article: PBMR Existing And Future R&D Test Facilities

Dieter Matzner, PBMR, Centurion, SOUTH AFRICA

Abstract

A well-planned Systems, Structures and Components (SSC) testing programme is used by Pebble Bed Modular Reactor (Pty) Ltd (PBMR) as a method to evaluate the applicability of the technology in meeting the design requirements of the SSC, to test the functionality of the SSC, to evaluate the manufacturability of the SSC, to assess safety and to provide data for reliability, availability, maintainability growth planning and life cycle cost estimates. The testing programme is based on structuring tests and test facilities from the lowest level (materials, parts, etc.) up to the PBMR configuration. This paper summarizes the PBMR existing test and validation facilities (high-temperature material test facilities, burn-up measurement tests, component tests, etc.), planned high-temperature helium test loops (up to 1 100 C) for the testing of integrated systems such as the fuel handling sphere circulation system, Reactivity Control System (RCS) and Reserve Shutdown System (RSS), and the test loops for the testing of the turbo machines.
