Abstract

This paper briefly summarizes the status of the SiC TRISO coated particle fuel concept under continuing development, and discusses options and issues for consideration in the development of advanced coated particle fuel. Anticipated fuel service conditions for representative prismatic high temperature reactor concepts currently under development are addressed in terms of establishing fuel service conditions and performance requirements. The irradiation and postirradiation heating data for the LEU SiC TRISO design are briefly reviewed, and compared with performance requirements for future high temperature reactors to establish a basis for consideration of advanced coated particle fuels for future development. Options for advanced fuel, primarily ZrC TRISO and a concept involving a thin ZrC coating on the kernel, which is then enclosed in SiC TRISO coatings (designated UO2*) are defined and discussed. Existing irradiation and testing data on the advanced concepts are briefly summarized, and potential for improvements in performance as well as possible design variations are suggested.
