Abstract

MHTGR RADIONUCLIDE SOURCE TERMS FOR USE IN SITING ABSTRACT This paper presents the site suitability source terms for the Modular High Temperature Gas-Cooled Reactor (MHTGR). The MHTGR program has identified a spectrum of accident release scenarios that form a basis for determining the MHTGR site suitability source terms. This basis, consistent with lOCFR100 guidelines, includes an evaluation of a spectrum of accidents to determine a set of conservative source terms. The spectrum of accidents is represented by a set of Licensing Basis Events (LBEs). The subset of LBEs that involve radionuclide release from the plant is identified. The MHTGR approach evaluates site suitability with respect to the regulatory criteria applicable not only for off-normal events, but also for normal operation and emergency planning. The radionuclide inventories available for potential release from the MHTGR and the release behavior of these inventories are characterized. A summary of the source terms for selected key radionuclides are given. The time-dependent MHTGR source terms account for a mix of accident phenomena, failure states of barriers, number of reactor modules, and chemical attack conditions that are consistent with the unique characteristics of the MHTGR.
