Conference Article: Experimental facility for research of accelerator driven systems
S.Chigrinov, A.Kievitskaia, A.Khilmanovich, I.Rakhno, C.RutkovskaiaAbstract
Having based on the mechanisms of the nuclear reactions in high energy and low energy (E = 15 - 20 MeV) ranges as well as formation and development of nucleon-meson cascades in thick heavy targets, the authors have shown that energy-angle spectra for neutrons escaping from heavy nuclei targets irradiated by 14 MeV neutrons are identical in shape with the spectra obtained for targets bombarded by high energy protons. The latter spectra are formed. mainly of low energy particles, namely neutrons. Thus experimental research on nuclear waste transmutation can be performed not only with high energy ion accelerators but also with low energy ones. Different neutron spectra can be formed in subcritical target/blanket systems driven by a high intensity neutron generator to measure cross-sections of transmutation of long-lived fission products and minor actinides, dynamic characteristics of Accelerator Driven Systems.
