Poverty’s Cancer

In a joint call to action, the Directors General of the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Dr. Margaret Chan and Yukiya Amano, urge leaders to recognize cancer as an enormous – and growing – global public-health problem. In a joint Op-Ed published in Project Syndicate they warn that over six out of ten cancer deaths this year will occur in the developing world, killing nearly five million people among poor and disadvantaged populations. Tragically, many of these cancer patients in the developing world could have survived with proper access to cancer control and treatment facilities that are more prevalent in the developed world. The WHO and IAEA warn that this tragic situation will continue to worsen unless global leaders give the issue greater prominence on the global health agenda.
