Challenges Faced by Technical and Scientific Support Organizations Conference 2018

The conference will highlight the importance of scientific and technical capabilities to support regulatory decision-making for enhanced nuclear and radiation safety and security and innovative proposals to address the development, maintenance and enhancement of such capacities.

Conference Hotel

The conference will be held at: The Hotel, Brussels Boulevard de Waterloo 38, 1000 Brussels, Belgium. 

The host organization BelV has negotiated a special rate of EUR 170 per room/night including breakfast at the conference hotel The Hotel, which is only available for conference participants. The Hotel is conveniently located in the heart of the city, close to upscale shopping streets and interesting cultural highlights.

Conference Dinner registration

Conference Participants are invited to register for the Conference Dinner at the restaurant " Chez Leon ", a typical Belgian Restaurant located in the city centre of Brussels, near the famous Grand Place.

Objectives

The conference will highlight initiatives to develop and strengthen scientific and technical capabilities to support regulatory decision-making for enhanced nuclear and radiation safety and security. In particular, the conference will:

  • Evaluate actions undertaken to address the recommendations from previous TSO conferences;
  • Address challenges related to embarking, existing or expanding nuclear power programmes;
  • Discuss the role and achievements of the Technical and Scientific Support Organization Forum (TSO Forum);
  • Present the need for, and benefits of, self-assessment for TSOs to maintain and enhance their technical and scientific capabilities to support regulatory bodies’ decision-making processes;
  • Discuss the significant contribution of the TSOs’ safety assessment work to the continuous updating and revision of the IAEA safety standards;
  • Address the role of TSOs in enhancing nuclear and radiation safety in applications other than nuclear power;
  • Highlight the main methods for supporting the development of scientific and technical expertise, including research and development;
  • Facilitate the exchange of experience and good practices in capacity building activities
  • Identifying areas in which regulatory bodies require assistance;
  • Discuss ways to enhance international cooperation through IAEA safety and security networks, Nuclear Security Training and Support Centres  and centres of excellence.

Topics

Six topical sessions will address:

  • The experiences of TSOs and regulatory bodies in working together
  • The technical challenges faced by TSOs in nuclear, radiation, waste management, safety and emergency preparedness and response,
  • Other challenges related to conflict of interest, civil society, public communication and synergies between safety and security,
  • Components, initiatives and solutions needed to support Member States in developing and strengthening technical and scientific capabilities.

Audience

The conference targets a broad range of experts in the areas of nuclear safety and security, and aims to bring together senior representatives from TSOs, regulatory bodies, industry and operators, research organizations and other relevant stakeholders.

Key deadlines

  • 17 March 2018: Submission of synopses and grant applications (Forms A, B and C). Extended until 9 April 2017
  • 10 June 2018: Notification of acceptance of synopses.
  • 29 June 2018: Submission of draft contributed papers.
  • 14 September 2018: Submission of final contributed papers.
