SIS was formed to promote Swedish participation in international standardisation activities in order to give Swedish companies, authorities and other organisations opportunity to influence the content of international standards. Further functions of SIS are to draw up national standards, to promote the use of standards and to provide information regarding their importance.

SIS is an independent, non-profit association with members from both the private and the public sectors.
