18th Session of the Commission on Sustainable Development: CSD-18 (3-14 May 2010)
CSD-18 FOCUS ON TRANSPORT, CHEMICALS, WASTE MANAGEMENT, MINING AND A 10-YEAR FRAMEWORK OF PROGRAMMES ON SUSTAINABLE CONSUMPTION AND PRODUCTION PATTERNS
The eighteenth session of the Commission on Sustainable Development (CSD-18) convened from 3 to 14 May 2010, at United Nations headquarters in New York, focused on thematic areas of transport, chemicals, waste management, mining and a 10-year framework of programmes on sustainable consumption and production patterns. The objective was to bring about an improved understanding of priority concerns of the thematic issues through different panel discussions, interactive dialogue among stakeholders, and by organizing a partnership forum and learning center including a series of side events. The first week was devoted to interactive thematic discussions on the five themes of the cycle as well as on interlinkages, cross-cutting issues and means of implementation, whilst the second week was dedicated to the small island developing States (SIDS) Day and the High-level segment attended by the ministers and senior level policy makers. HIGH LEVEL SEGMENT (HLS), 12-14 MAY 2010
Ministers of environment, development and planning attended the HLS together with other line ministers of the themes of this cycle. Key features of the HLS included an opening session, four ministerial roundtables, ministerial dialogue with the UN system and major groups, a strategic session on the way forward. In addition, a closed ministerial consultation meeting was held under the theme of straight talk.
