6th Session of the UNFCCC Conference of the Parties: CoP-6 (13-24 November 2000)

STATEMENT.

Deputy Director General for Management David B. Waller represented the IAEA at the High-Level Segment of the opening of the CoP-6 Plenary. He addressed the proposed exclusion of nuclear power from the Kyoto Protocol's provisions on Joint Implementation (JI) and the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM).

CDM CASE STUDIES IN DEVELOPING COUNTRIES.

A side event at CoP-6 presented a set of case studies, coordinated by the IAEA, that examine potential Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) projects based on nuclear power. Case studies were conducted in China, India, Pakistan, the Republic of Korea and Vietnam. The results are summarized in this booklet.

CLIMATE CHANGE AND NUCLEAR POWER.

At CoP-6 the IAEA distributed a new booklet summarizing nuclear power's current status - including cost, safety, waste management and nuclear non-proliferation - and its potential for contributing to the reduction in greenhouse gas emissions called for in the Climate Change Convention.
