11th Session of the UNFCCC Conference of the Parties / 1st Meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol: CoP-11 / MoP-1 (28 November - 9 December 2005)

Conference of the Parties (CoP-11)
The 11th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Convention on Climate Change (CoP-11) in Montreal was the first to take place after entry into force of the Kyoto Protocol and thus also served as the first Meeting of the Parties to the Kyoto Protocol (MoP-1). As such, it formally adopted the rules for implementing the Kyoto Protocol that were preliminarily adopted at CoP-7 as the Marakkesh Accords. These include exclusions of nuclear power from projects eligible for greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction credits under the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) and Joint Implementation (JI).

Be patient - it will take a few seconds to download. With respect to emission reductions after 2012, it also agreed "...to initiate a process to consider further commitments... in an open-ended ad hoc working group of Parties to the Kyoto Protocol... which... shall aim to complete its work... as early as possible and in time to ensure that there is no gap between the first and second commitment periods". An important issue for nuclear power will be the fate of its current exclusion from CDM and JI.

The IAEA co-hosted with the OECD/Nuclear Energy Agency a side event on the Global Status and Outlook for Nuclear Power. To see a webcast of the side event click here. For the agenda and PowerPoint presentations please click on the appropriate link:
