STRENGTHENING AND HARMONIZING QUALITY MANAGEMENT SYSTEMS
As Member States strive to implement ISO standards and still meet the requirements of nuclear standards, a need for new documents to integrate all the aspects of managing facilities and activities involving the use of ionizing radiation, including the management of safety, health, environment, quality and economic requirements in a coherent manner, was identified. To meet the demands of a changing market economy and the need for better management systems, documents enhancing the Agency’s QA code will highlight the improvement, the safety culture and the management responsibility for Member States. New topics such as resources, organizational changes and the work environment are also included. All the requirements in the published standards on Quality Assurance (SS 50-C/SG-Q) will be retained in the new documents. The new standards will harmonize the structure and content with the latest provisions of ISO standard 9001:2000 and therefore produce the management systems specific standards for application to all activities and facilities in the nuclear area. The standards have provisions for grading the application of requirements to activities and facilities in large as well as small organizations.
