Source Recovery

Basic Management Options

Today, a large number of developing countries are unable to manage and dispose of sources due to a lack of resources or required infrastructure. In addition, permanent disposition of sources is limited by the lack of licensed disposal sites in the world. Therefore the only option available for management of sources is to condition them for long-term storage. The conditioning of a source refers to those operations that produce a waste package suitable for handling, transport, storage and/or disposal. Conditioning may include encapsulation of the source, placing it in a radiation shielding media and/or enclosure of the source in a container or in an overpack.
