This is an introduction to a range of topics associated with the Surveillance and Maintenance stage for a nuclear facility undergoing decommissioning. There is strong emphasis on maintenance of internal systems so that a safety environment is maintained. Aspects of Surveillance and Maintenance examined include the role of health physics, testing and maintenance of vital systems, environmental surveillance, the role of routine preventive maintenance and special maintenance projects as a tool to extend the facility life. Part of the presentation includes hazard analysis and characterisation of the facility once it enters its inactive state. The speaker is quick to highlight the importance of capturing and recording process knowledge while it exists and before the facility enters a prolonged period of inactivity.
