Management of Spent Fuel from Power Reactors
Providing technical guidance on good practices for long term storage of spent fuel
Objective: To increase the capability of interested Member States to identify technical issues and develop individually or through international co-operation methods for long term storage of spent fuel.
Details: With a protracted decision on the final destination of spent fuel produced from nuclear power production, many Member States are interested in the long term storage of spent fuel until there is a satisfactory alternative in future. While there is a considerable amount of knowledge available on the current storage needs of spent fuel, further efforts are required to identify technical issues involved and to ensure reliable implementation of long term storage of spent fuel. Many Member States, envisioning long term storage of spent fuel, have to comply with evolving technical requirements and developments in the future.
