IAEA Support of Research Reactor HEU to LEU Fuel Conversion

Meetings and Conferences

In June 2006, a Technical Workshop on HEU Minimization and the International Symposium on Minimization of HEU in the Civilian Nuclear Sector were organized by the Government of Norway in cooperation with the IAEA. More than 100 experts from 41 countries participated in the Technical Workshop and around 130 participants from 45 countries in the International Symposium. Participants concluded that virtually all RRs can use LEU fuel without a significant penalty to their educational, scientific, technical and industrial applications. Similarly, there was broad consensus that LEU based 99Mo production is technically feasible. The positive role of the IAEA in HEU minimization efforts was highlighted, and there was broad consensus that the IAEA should expand its relevant activities.

During January 2012, a 2nd International Symposium on HEU Minimization was hosted by the Austrian Government in cooperation with the Government of Norway, the Nuclear Threat Initiative (NTI) and the IAEA. The symposium updated and reinforced the findings of the 2006 event, recognized IAEA activities and encouraged ongoing support of HEU minimization.

The U.S. Department of Energy/National Nuclear Security Administration’s Office of Global Threat Reduction organizes, in cooperation with the IAEA, the annual International Meeting on Reduced Enrichment for Research and Test Reactors (RERTR).
