Technical Working Group on Nuclear Fuel Cycle Options (TWGNFCO)Pagefragment
Responsible Officer: Gary DYCK
Technical Working Group on Nuclear Fuel Cycle Options (TWGNFCO) was established to support the Agency's efforts to assist its Member States in their nuclear fuel cycle activities by providing an international cooperation tool.
The TWGNFCO is a merged group of previous Regular Advisory Group on Spent Fuel Management and International Working Group on Nuclear Fuel Cycle Options after a decision by the Agency to restructure the advisory groups in the Department of Nuclear Energy. The previous Advisory Group on Spent Fuel Management was established in 1984 and achieved its objectives in its active years. The previous International Working Group on Nuclear Fuel Cycle Options was established after the recommendations of the Agency's International Symposium on Nuclear Fuel Cycle and Reactor Strategies: Adjusting to Realities in 1997. Two groups was merged under the name of Technical Working Group on Nuclear Fuel Cycle Options in 2002. The first meeting of newly formed TWGNFCO was held in Vienna in July 2002. Since then meetings have been held on annual basis.
The TWGNFCO deals with
- the back-end fuel cycle policies and strategies to which first priority is given in the Agency's medium term strategy in regard to nuclear energy;
- spent fuel management;
- fuel cycle options and relevant issues;
- nuclear material management.
