| Project Title: | Russian-Norwegian-American co-operation on the expansion and upgrading of the treatment facility for low level liquid r/a waste (LLRW) in Murmansk, Russia |
| Background: | (optional) |
| Description: | The project will increase the capacity at the LLRW processing facility at the RTP Atomflot in Murmansk. The facility handles liquid waste from the nuclear icebreaker fleet. |
| Objectives: | A major objective is to enable Russia to permanently refrain from disposing of r/a waste in Arctic waters and formally adhere to the London Convention's ban. |
| Results: | The agreed modifications will increase the existing facility's capacity from 1200m3 per year to 5000 m3 per year, and thus cover the needs of the icebreaker fleet. It will also permit the processing of high -salt wastes from the Russian Navy's Northern Fleet and improve the stabilization and interim storage of the processed wastes. |
| Consequences if not Realized: | Should the project not be completed, it will severely hamper Russian efforts to adhere to the London Convention. |
| Financing: | By Norway, Russia, USA. |
| Project Cost: | US$ 5.6 million (planning, initial design, equipment). |
| Start Date: | Autumn, 1996. |
| End Date: | 1998 (commissioning). One year of test operation is envisaged before the full completion of the project. |
