Physics, Chemistry, Instrumentation (PCI) Laboratory

The PCI Laboratory provides services in the physical sciences, including:

Chemistry

The Chemistry Unit undertakes projects in relation to sustainable management of the terrestrial environment, in particular studies in radioecology, ecotoxicology and remediation strategies. The unit has leading scientific and technical expertise in analytical measurements and radioanalytical chemistry, and transfers these technologies to Member States. This includes organizing and conducting proficiency tests, and production, storage and distribution of reference materials.

Instrumentation

The Instrumentation Unit contributes to activities in the field of instrumentation maintenance, servicing and repair, with a particular emphasis on assisting developing countries.

A major research activity of the Instrumentation Unit is X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) spectrometry, used worldwide for the analysis of geological materials, environmental pollution monitoring, and study of cultural heritage objects.

Dosimetry

The Dosimetry Unit operates in the framework of the IAEA Dosimetry and Medical Radiation Physics programme. The Unit is the central laboratory of a network of Secondary Standard Dosimetry Laboratories (SSDLs), operated jointly by the IAEA and the World Health Organization (WHO).

Isotope Hydrology

The Isotope Hydrology Unit has been instrumental in developing and disseminating isotope hydrology techniques to laboratories and field projects worldwide. The Unit serves as a reference laboratory and sets international standards by producing, storing and distributing reference material for all isotope hydrology laboratories worldwide.
