Radioecology

The following definition of radioecology was given by Ward Whicker and accepted by delegates of the 9th International Congress of Radiation Research (Toronto, July 1991):

Radioecology is a science that

  1. attempts to understand and predict the transport of radionuclides through natural and ag-ricultural ecosystems to various receptors such as plants, animals and humans;

  2. studies effects of environmental radioactivity on plants and animals, particularly at the population and community levels of biological organization, and

  3. uses radioisotopes as tracers of ecological processes with the goal to understand these processes.
