Radioecology
The following definition of radioecology was given by Ward Whicker and accepted by delegates of the 9th International Congress of Radiation Research (Toronto, July 1991):
Radioecology is a science that
- attempts to understand and predict the transport of radionuclides through natural and ag-ricultural ecosystems to various receptors such as plants, animals and humans;
- studies effects of environmental radioactivity on plants and animals, particularly at the population and community levels of biological organization, and
- uses radioisotopes as tracers of ecological processes with the goal to understand these processes.
