Chemistry Unit
The Chemistry Unit is a part of the Physics, Chemistry and Instrumentation (PCI) Laboratory. It is located at the Agency's Laboratories Seibersdorf.
The mission of the Chemistry Unit is to prepare, characterise, certify and distribute reference materials of terrestrial origin, organize intercomparison exercises and proficiency tests, co-ordinate the activities of the ALMERA network, provide training and expert assistance to scientists from Member States laboratories and provide analytical and radioanalytical support for the benefit of the programmes and projects of the IAEA and its Member States.
These activities are designed to:
- Assist Member States in the area of radionuclide measurements, and in maintaining/improving the quality of their analytical measurements, thus helping them to achieve internationally acceptable levels of quality assurance.
- Assist Member States and coordinate the development of radioecological methods for use in radiological impact assessments
- Coordinate and carry out radioactivity monitoring campaigns when requested by Member States.
- Apply and demonstrate the applicability of nuclear and isotopic techniques in a variety of scientific fields, including human nutrition research and in studies of non-radioactive environmental pollutants.
