The Agency's Laboratories Seibersdorf and Vienna

Major Trends

Activities at the Agency's Laboratories emphasize quality assurance procedures meant to improve confidence in the use of transferred technologies as well as to provide reliance on data generated by national and regional laboratories. Efforts are made to focus on techniques, which contribute to environmental monitoring and assessment for sustainable development. Strong impetus is towards a strong Quality Management leading to accreditation.

The Agency's Laboratories collaborate with laboratories in developing countries, which have been identified as focal points for the creation or strengthening of national or regional infrastructures in the applications of nuclear techniques. They also collaborate with laboratories in developed countries by establishing and co-ordinating specialized networks. Examples of these networks are: the network of Secondary Standard Dosimetry Laboratories (SSDL), promoting and maintaining measurement standards for dosimetry in radiotherapy and radiation protection, the ALMERA network (Analytical Laboratories for the Measurement of Environmental RAdioActivity), and the network of Safeguards Analytical Laboratories (NWAL).
