Maintenance Unit
The Maintenance Unit (MU) belongs to the General Services and Safety Section (GESS)
The MU is composed of 12 staff and 8 non-staff members; it is responsible for the upkeep and proper functioning of all Agency-owned premises and associated land of the Seibersdorf Laboratories, in compliance with strict safety and security imperatives. These consist of 16,500 m2 of laboratory, office and technical space, as well as of 50,000 m2 of surrounding areas including car parks and ancillary facilities such as tanks, greenhouses, containers, etc.
The infrastructure comprises various electrical, fluid, gas, effluent networks, fire detection networks, water-chillers with associated loops, transformer plants, air compression plant, and liquid nitrogen filling plant, as well as glasshouses, clean rooms (up to class 1000), fly mass rearing specially air-conditioned compounds, chemistry and physics laboratories (involving hazard materials), technical workshops, conference, catering and training facilities.
Furthermore, the MU is responsible for:
- Ensuring the safe and reliable internal distribution of gases, liquid nitrogen and procured/delivered goods, mail, parcels, etc;
- Keeping in good condition and continuously upgrading a complex technical and safety alarm system, in close cooperation with health physicists, emergency controllers' groups and the Austrian Research centre.
- Maintaining the Laboratory's eleven vehicle pool (seven vans, minibuses and car, two tractors, two forklifts).
- A yearly budget of approx. US$ 380k is allocated to the MU for the implementation of the above tasks; this figure excludes staff salaries and major construction works which are budgeted separately.
