The IAEA Laboratory Seibersdorf received a high-ranking US delegation on April 9th, 2008. The group was chaired by Ms. Mary Alice Hayward, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State, Bureau of International Security and Nonproliferation. The Director of the IAEA Laboratories, Ms. Gabriele Voigt, welcomed the visitors and provided an overview of operations. Thereafter the group was primarily interested in the Safeguards Analytical Laboratory, introduced by the head of the laboratory, Mr. Christian Schmitzer.
An extensive tour of the laboratory facilities, including Clean Laboratory (led by Dave Donohue), SIMS lab (guided by Jane Poths) and Nuclear Chemistry Laboratory (directed by Steve Balsley) was concluded with an extensive discussion on maintaining analytical capabilities for Safeguards in the mid- to long-term future. In closing it was emphasised that the important function of the Safeguards Analytical Laboratory must be allowed to continue as a service provider to the Department of Safeguards.
