Entomology Unit

Tsetse flies

Services

Seven species of tsetse, one sub-species and one eye colour mutant are maintained, some in relatively large numbers. They are provided to Member States as required. This service is extremely valuable as there are now only a few laboratories maintaining tsetse.

Glossina pallidipes

We are collaborating with the Tsetse & Trypanosomiasis Research Institute, Tanga, United Republic of Tanzania and the Institute of Zoology, Slovak Academy of Sciences, Bratislava, Slovak Republic to develop them as additional centres for supplying tsetse.

The Unit also coordinates the collection and distribution of genetic material from flies from different parts of Africa and provides DNA sequences for population genetic analysis.
