Fruit flies
Fruit flies are very important pests of fruit and vegetables worldwide and have a major impact on trade and quarantine regulation. Some species are already found in many parts of the world whilst others are increasing their distribution range due to increased trade and despite quarantine regulation. Many species of fruit flies are being successfully targeted by SIT programmes and the Unit is involved with developing different components of the technology for the different species. Traditionally the Unit has focused most of its R and D efforts on the Mediterranean fruit fly but it is shifting that focus to other fruit flies including important Anastrepha and Bactrocera pest species. The Unit carries out research and development activities in the following areas:
