Small and Medium-sized Reactors Integrated for Greater Energy Efficiency
15 March 2012 - In combination with renewable energy sources, a small or medium-sized reactor (SMR) can provide a flexible base-load supply for electricity production and non-electric applications leading to positive synergies among clean energy options. The IAEA discusses the benefits and the prerequisites of these hybrid systems, explores the potential and preparedness of Member States to deploy them and looks at the possibility of several SMR designs to play such a stabilizing role in mitigating renewables' variability.
