Consultancy Meeting to update
the Steam Generator Ageing Management TECDOC

15-18 June 2009
IAEA Headquarters, Vienna, Austria

Five consultants from five countries attended the meeting. The meeting was chaired by Scientific Secretary Mr Ludovit Kupca. Mr Ki Sig Kang and Mr Richard Shouler of NPES participated in the meeting.

The objective of the Consultancy (Task A1.02/2) is to update the IAEA-TECDOC-981 "Assessment and management of ageing of major nuclear power plant components important to safety: Steam generators" with the latest relevant information to reflect the state-of-the-art situation and to produce a publication which addresses WWERs, CANDUs, and Western BWRs/PWRs.

The team of consultants reviewed section by section the current IAEA-TECDOC-981 and discussed numerous suggestions on revision of the content and layout. After three days of discussion, participants agreed on their contributions with the new updated chapters/sections in order to be able to update the information and prepare draft working material for the second Consultancy Meeting which will be held in VIC from 1-4 December 2009.

Each chapter has been reviewed thoroughly and participants have been assigned to prepare their contributions to each updated chapter:

  • Steam generator descriptions
  • Steam generator design basis, fabrication and materials
  • Steam generator degradation mechanisms
  • Steam generator ageing management: operational guidelines
  • Steam generator inspection and monitoring requirements and technologies
  • Steam generator assessment methods and fitness for service guidelines
  • Steam generator maintenance: mitigation, repair and replacement
  • Steam generator ageing management programme

It has been proposed to develop a good example of working ageing management programme (AMP) for steam generator – example will be shown in Appendix.
