International Scientific and Technical Conference on
Safety Assurance of NPP with WWER

26-29 May 2009
OKB Gidropress, Podolsk, Russia

Conference held in OKB Gidropress, Podolsk, Russian Federation on 26-29 May 2009 was attended by 235 specialists from 13 states, 62 Russian and 21 foreign organizations. More than 170 papers were presented on various aspects of design and operational safety of WWER NPPs.

The actual main activities and future major challenges in WWER fleet are:

  • new reactors and development of structural materials for NPP components with planned 60 years design lifetime;

  • power uprate in operated units in the range 4-10%;

  • preparation of natural circulation concept in the primary circuit of WWER-1000/1200 units on the power level up to 30% without main coolant pump for the case of beyond design accidents;

  • development of high temperature corrosion monitoring in operational conditions with the aim to evaluate the lifetime of steam generator tubing.

There are demands for the activities in:

  1. licensing of regulators for operation, lifetime extension/long term operation and power uprate,
  2. development of new WWER units with the power in the range of 300-1600 MW,
  3. innovations in design of reactors with supercritical water parameters,
  4. preparation of new standards for existing and developing NPPs,
  5. implementation of activities in the field of nuclear knowledge and preservation.
