Technical Meeting on Environmental Issues in New Nuclear Power Programmes
Environmental protection is instrumental to deployment of new nuclear power programmes, as environmental issues are often directly related to public perception and acceptance of a certain project. However, capacities and national practices of Member States in tackling environmental issues related to nuclear power can vary greatly.
Therefore, this TM will focus, in particular, on a typical Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) process roadmap based on international experience across the various implementation phases and its main characteristics. Member States will be provided with an opportunity to exchange information on ways to manage the development of a new nuclear power programme in an environmentally sound manner, consistent with the IAEA's Milestones approach. Experts from experienced and newcomer Member States will discuss common challenges, possible cooperation, address concerns and issues that their countries are facing, or may face, while addressing the environmental issues in their nuclear power programmes.
The outcome of the discussions will be used to finalize the planned IAEA publication "Environmental Issues in New Nuclear Power Programmes".
