INIR Mission in Thailand
IAEA Team and national counterparts during the INIR Mission in Thailand in December 2010
20 December 2010 - An integrated nuclear infrastructure review (INIR) mission on the status of the development of nuclear infrastructure in Thailand was held from 13 to 18 December 2010. Mr. Park, Director of the IAEA Division of Nuclear Power, led the IAEA team that conducted the objective review.
Thailand plans to finish the pre-project activity phase by the end of 2010, and expects a government decision on proceeding to the project implementation stage early in 2011. The IAEA team reviewed the Thailand's self-evaluation report which was prepared and submitted to the IAEA in advance of the mission and which summarizes the result of pre-project activities.
The mission was conducted in a cooperative and open manner with the counterpart organizations. Thailand has thoroughly studied the steps needed to proceed based on IAEA documents, involved the key organizations under the Nuclear Power Infrastructure Establishment Coordination Committee (NPIECC), and has knowledge of the required nuclear infrastructure.
The review team identified several gaps that should be addressed either in phase 1 or early in phase 2, to sustain overall progress in developing nuclear infrastructure. The team also made specific recommendations and suggestions to address these gaps.
This INIR Mission was the first one based on the revised INIR guidelines. The INIR team noted several good practices, which are exceeding fulfilment of the conditions; they could also serve other countries as a model for their nuclear infrastructure development.
