22 June 2007 | A delegation of four IAEA officials, led by Mr. Olli Heinonen, Deputy Director General for Safeguards, are due to arrive in Pyongyang on Tuesday, 26 June for a five-day visit.
The invitation from the DPRK´s Director General of the General Department of Atomic Energy, Mr. Ri Je Son, came on 16 June. The team is expected to discuss and agree on modalities for verification and monitoring by the IAEA of the shutdown of the Yongbyon nuclear facility. DPRK officials confirmed the timing of the visit this afternoon.
"This is good news," IAEA Director General Mohamed ElBaradei told a press conference today, "and I think we finally should be able to start what I think will be a long and complex process, but I believe very much a process in the right direction."
