A selected preview of IAEA meetings and events for 2007:
January
- The IAEA kicks off its 50th anniversary year, looking back at some moments in time since 1957.
- Global leaders including IAEA Chief ElBaradei meet in Davos at the World Economic Forum.
- "Polar Lights" - a scientific conference for young nuclear professionals - opens in St. Petersburg, Russia, with the IAEA´s participation.
- The world´s ITER nuclear fusion project is set for review in Aix en Provence, France.
February
- Nuclear safeguards and budget committees of the IAEA Board of Governors meet in Vienna. The full Board meets in early March.
- Through its programmes to fight the disease, the IAEA joins in marking World Cancer Day 4 February.
- Nuclear communicators from Europe and other regions meet in Milan at the European Nuclear Society´s conference on public information.
- The premier international conference for nuclear waste management opens in Arizona.
- The next session of the Six-Party Talks on North Korea´s nuclear program take place in Beijing 8-13 February 2007.
March
- The safe production and use of different naturally occurring radioactive materials takes centre stage at a symposium in Seville, Spain, supported by the IAEA.
- Starting 5 March in Vienna, the IAEA Board discusses issues related to nuclear safety, safeguards and technology.
- At the IAEA and elsewhere, the world marks International Women´s Day on 8 March.
- In late March, Europe marks the 50th anniversary of the Treaties of Rome that set up a unified economic community and the European Atomic Energy Community (Euratom), which partners with the IAEA on nuclear safeguards. Today nuclear plants supply one-third of the European Union´s electricity.
- The next session of the Six-Party Talks on North Korea´s nuclear program take place 19 March to hear reports of working groups.
April
- Japan hosts an international conference on desalting seawater using nuclear power, hydrogen production, and other industrial applications.
- In France, experts take stock of developments influencing technical and scientific support for nuclear and radiation safety.
- Advances in measuring radioactivity in the environment are reviewed at an IAEA conference in Vienna.
- The 45-member Nuclear Suppliers´ Group - a body outside IAEA auspices - is scheduled to meet in South Africa, with the USA-India nuclear agreement reportedly on the agenda.
May
- Experts from dozens of countries share experience in applying isotope hydrology to manage their water resources.
- In Germany, developments are highlighted influencing the production and use of radiopharmaceuticals.
June
- As the workforce changes, nuclear leaders take a closer look at knowledge management and related issues.
- The IAEA Board´s June meetings open 11 June in Vienna.
July
- The 2007 World Nuclear University (WNU) Summer Institute starts 14 July, hosted by the Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute and Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Company.
- On 29 July, the IAEA officially marks 50 years of international service.
August
- The summer session opens at the International School of Nuclear Law in Montpellier, France.
September
- Mongolia hosts an international conference on medical treatment using radiopharmaceuticals.
- The IAEA Board´s pre-General Conference meetings start 10 September.
- The IAEA General Conference of Member States meets in Vienna starting 17 September.
October
- How long can nuclear plants safely generate electricity? Experts examine issues.
November
- The IAEA Board´s Committee for Technical Cooperation meets starting 19 November.
- The full IAEA Board meeting opens 22 November.
- An international conference examines issues related to the safe, secure and productive operation of the world´s research reactors.
- Health practitioners meet in Thailand on medical imaging technologies helping patients around the world.
December
- India hosts a global conference on water issues from environmental and energy perspectives.
