IAEA Director General Keynote Speaker at Nuclear "Reality Check"

IAEA Director General Mohamed ElBaradei heads a distinguished line-up of leaders Monday, 7 November, at the annual nuclear conference of the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. The conference features sessions over two days in Washington, DC.

Dr. ElBaradei - who has called the conference an annual "reality check" for nuclear non-proliferation and arms control - is among invited keynote speakers, scheduled to address participants at 09.00 a.m. Washington time Monday, 7 November. He will focus his remarks on ways to gauge performance and progress in efforts to stop the spread of nuclear weapons.

Other keynote and plenary speakers include US Senator Richard Lugar; Sam Nunn, co-Chairman of the Nuclear Threat Initiative; Annalisa Giannella, Personal Representative for WMD of European Union High Representative Javier Solana; and Nabil Fahmy, Egypt´s Ambassador to the United States. The conference theme is "Sixty Years Later", a look back at the six decades of the nuclear age and a look forward to solutions to today´s proliferation problems.

The Carnegie conference is among the Director General´s recent engagements. Over the past week, he addressed the United Nations General Assembly, participated in the John F. Kennedy Jr. Forum at Harvard University; and gave the annual David J. Rose Lecture at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
