IAEA Addresses Safeguards Verification Challenges

IAEA and international experts will discuss current and future challenges facing the nuclear verification regime next week at a five-day symposium entitled International Safeguards: Addressing Verification Challenges in Vienna, Austria, organized by the IAEA.

IAEA Deputy Director General for Safeguards, Mr. Olli Heinonen, and Ms. Jill Cooley, Director of Concepts and Planning Division, will brief journalists about the symposium at a press briefing at 08:45 on Monday, 16 October, in Vienna.

More than 500 experts are expected to take part in the symposium which will last from 16 to 20 October. They will address new and existing safeguards technologies, techniques and approaches.

IAEA Director General Mohamed ElBaradei will deliver an opening statement at 09:30 on Monday. The event will be the 10th safeguards symposium to be organized by the IAEA. Traditionally the symposia are held every four to five years. The last one was in 2001.

All sessions of the symposium are open to journalists, who can register below, or at Gate 1 of the Vienna International Centre on the opening day.

The event will be held in the IAEA Board Room with a video link to adjoining meeting rooms.
