A meeting of the IAEA Board of Governors will commence on Monday, February 28, 2005, at 10.30 a.m. and is expected to last at least three days. IAEA Director General Mohamed ElBaradei will open the meeting with an overview statement. The Board will discuss, among other issues, measures to strengthen international co-operation in nuclear, radiation and transport safety and waste management as well as the IAEA's activities related to nuclear science, technology and applications.
Under the Nuclear Verification item on the agenda there will be a discussion of the report to the Board regarding the implementation of safeguards in Egypt. The IAEA Deputy Director General for Safeguards will also update the Board on inspection findings in Iran, including on verification of the suspension agreement.
Under the Agenda item, "Appointment of the Director General," the Canadian Chair will report to the Board on the outcome of her consultations with member States.
The Board is also expected to discuss a U.S. proposal to create a special committee within the Board on Safeguards and Verification.
The meeting is closed to the press.
The introductory statement by Dr. ElBaradei will be available to the media and will be placed on the IAEA website ( www.iaea.org) after delivery at about 11:00 a.m. on Monday 28 February.
